HOW TO SET YOURSELF UP FOR A SUCCESSFUL NEW YEAR
1. reflect on the previous year
The actual process of planning and preparing for a successful new year doesn’t begin with setting new year’s resolutions as most people think, but by reflecting on the past year.
To set yourself up for a successful new year, reflecting on the previous year is crucial. You can learn a lot just by reviewing the past year. There is so much to understand from your previous mistakes and failures, as well as your successes.
Your perceived failures only remain failures if you don’t learn from them. Otherwise, they are excellent teachers, even better than your successes.
“Mistakes are a fact of life. It is the response to error that counts.” – Nikki Giovanni
A research paper by Harvard on self-reflection in the context of work performance shows that taking time to reflect on our work improves job performance in the long run. Reflecting on what we’ve done teaches us to do it more effectively the next time.
In addition, year-end reflection has plenty of benefits, including improving your productivity and time management skills, giving you a sense of purpose, increasing your satisfaction, and reducing your stress levels.
MY EXPERIENCE:
I like to do a year-end reflection in December. I’ve been doing it for the past few years, which has helped me greatly. I tend to be self-critical and perfectionistic. At the same time, I sometimes tend to block out my failures or embarrassing moments. End-of-the-year reflection allows me to be more objective and get a balanced view of things. as a result, I can learn from the past year and focus on my learnings and growth.
2. set concrete goals
Not setting specific goals is the most common mistake people make while goal setting. Your goals need to be precise and clear. Instead of saying something vague, “I want to get fitter,” you should aim for something specific like “I want to lose 10 pounds by summer” or “I will go to the gym three times a week for three months.”
Other questions you can ask yourself are: Till when do you want to achieve the goal? How will you measure your progress? What steps will you take to complete it?
The more details you add, the easier it becomes for your brain to understand and work toward them. As a result, your motivation levels will be higher.
Your goals should also be achievable and realistic. It’s always great to dream big, but make sure the goals are attainable, and you’re not setting yourself up for failure.
MY EXPERIENCE:
I really wanted to become fitter and more physically active in 2022. So I set a goal to exercise at least five times a week. That’s it.
It might sound super simple to some people, but I didn’t want to have any excuse for not doing it. I could’ve also set something like exercising 30 minutes a day, but I didn’t want to have the time barrier going in. I know I wouldn’t feel like exercising for 30 minutes when I’m tired or have a lot to do, and therefore, I wouldn’t do it all. That’s why I removed the barrier.
I used a simple habit tracker to track this goal in my bullet journal. And it has worked quite well for me!
3. create a plan
You have set goals for yourself; that’s great! But now, you need to break the goals into actionable steps and create a plan. Break down your big goals into smaller goals. And each of them should be time bound and realistically possible to achieve.
Most of us crave instant gratification. Hence, this will allow you to get that dopamine hit every time you hit one of your smaller goals.
For example, If you want to lose 10 pounds in the next five months, you should devise a detailed plan to achieve it. Break down the goal into smaller chunks. Losing 10 pounds in the next six months means losing 2 pounds monthly. That means you need to create a calorie deficit. How will you achieve that? You can do that by burning more calories by exercising more or by reducing your calorie intake. Which option is best suited for you? Come up with a plan that you can stick to in the long run.
MY EXPERIENCE:
Because my goal was simple: exercise as many days as possible, I simply planned to do it. I had decided on a time – around 6 pm, as that’s when I’m free most days. At that time, I put on my running shoes and stepped outside. Sometimes, I ran for an hour; other times, only for a few minutes. Because I didn’t force myself to run, say, 5 miles every day, I could stick to it for the entire year.
4. write your goals and keep them visible to you
One of the most effective ways to achieve your goals is by writing them. Start by compiling a list of your goals and then decide when each goal will be achieved. Set specific and realistic goals for yourself, then write them down.
Focus on attaining the goal on time, and don’t let it slip your mind during the year. Suppose you set up a calendar to monitor your progress. In that case, you’ll be more likely to achieve your goal and feel happier knowing that you did something positive for yourself.
MY EXPERIENCE:
I like to write my goals on the front page of my journal. I journal every day, so I look at them at least once a day. Vision boards are also considered very effective. You can watch this video which shows how to create one.
And I’ve always wanted to make one, but somehow I feel weird about displaying my goals to everyone. This year, I created one digitally. I have the image saved on my phone and favorited it, so hopefully, I’ll look at it often.
5. be patient with yourself
It’s important to keep in mind that you will only achieve your goals only after a while. They say it takes 20 years to become an “overnight success.” After all, nothing worth achieving can be achieved instantly.
This is especially true if you have long-term goals that require at least 6 months to a year or longer to complete.
But remember that all your daily habits and steps add up. If you’re impatient, you run the risk of giving up too quickly. As a result, you won’t achieve your goal at all.
Not all days are equal. On some days, you might be super productive, and on others, you might want to give up. But all this is perfectly normal.
Consistency is the key to being successful. So show some compassion and empathy towards yourself. An excellent way to practice this is to talk to yourself the way you would talk to a friend. Research has shown that speaking in the third person helps to regulate your emotions better and reduce your distress.
MY EXPERIENCE:
Improving my physical health was one of my top goals for 2022. I exercised consistently – almost every day throughout the year. I didn’t have any target for ideal weight, so I couldn’t really measure my progress in that aspect, but I kept going.
In November, I had a chance to register for a marathon, and I thought, why not! I hadn’t run a marathon before and was a bit nervous, but I decided to do it. And to my surprise, I could complete a 10k marathon in a considerably short time. At the beginning of the year, I would’ve never imagined I could do it! This just goes to show that as long as you are taking steps in the right direction, you’re definitely making progress. It might take a while to be visible, and that’s okay!
6. celebrate your successes
Whenever you achieve any goal, big or small, make sure to acknowledge it. Doing this will motivate you to achieve more. Also, remember to reward yourself every time you accomplish a goal. You can do anything that you enjoy. You could treat yourself to a nice cup of coffee or go out for a movie night with your friends. Just make sure you don’t overdo it.
This way, you will have something to look forward to the next time you reach your goal, and, in turn, you’ll be more productive.
Setting and achieving goals boosts your self-confidence and self-esteem, so it’s important to acknowledge and celebrate them.
MY EXPERIENCE:
I enjoy drinking different types of coffee, so whenever I finish a goal, I go to one of my favorite local coffee shops and get a nice cup. If I do something extra important, I also treat myself to a pastry with coffee. It can sound simple, but it works for me! I enjoy the feeling of drinking that coffee in peace, knowing that I’ve earned it. Also, because the reward is relatively inexpensive and easy to get, I can get it whenever I hit my smaller goals and targets.
7. take a break to reset
You want to make sure you start the new year on a positive note. You can only do that if you’re physically and mentally well-rested.
To set yourself up for a successful new year, it’s essential that you take a break before the year begins. In our busy and fast-paced world, it’s easy to convince yourself that you do not have the time to take breaks. Or you don’t deserve one because you haven’t been productive enough! That’s just crazy.
You’re a human, not a machine; no matter how much society wants you to believe it, you are not your work. Your productivity doesn’t define your self-worth.
So stay away from work, and not just physically! Mental separation from your work is also essential. Once you’re done planning for the new year, take at least a few days off where you do the things you like and don’t think about work at all. Doing this can help you relax and unwind.
In the last remaining days of 2022, ensure you get adequate rest and sleep, exercise, and look after your mind by meditating and journaling to come back better and stronger in 2024!
MY EXPERIENCE:
It can be tempting to keep going. I have been facing the same problem. I have vacations in December, and if I don’t do anything productive, it feels like I’m wasting this precious time when I could be using it to work on this blog, study more, or organize my room… But I scheduled five days completely off, where I didn’t do anything related to studies or work. I went on a mini vacation with my friends and had the best time there! I returned feeling energized and refreshed, so I would definitely recommend taking some time out for yourself before the new year based on my experience.
Other things that you should definitely consider in order to have a successful new year are:
- Taking care of your mental and physical health
- Setting financial goals
- Decluttering your room
